101 TIP:

"Rich in content... simple in design"

Building Your Website Pages

Choosing Webpage Software

A web page is written in a language called Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML. In order to produce an HTML file, all that is really needed is a basic text editor. Windows Notepad is ideal for this, as is SimpleText for those with Macintosh computers.

But most web page designers now use one of the many HTML editors available now, such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage. These editors use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) approach, and allow a designer to preview changes in the appearance of the web page as HTML code is added or modified.

FrontPage is from Microsoft and ideal for those companies wishing to place a lot of existing content on to its web site, due to its integration with the Office software family. However, if you do choose FrontPage then make sure that your web host can support it – most do but check first. Dreamweaver has a steeper learning curve, but will provide all of the features needed to design and administer even complex web sites.

Web Templates

If you don’t feel that you want to design the web site yourself, there are other options open to you. Many web hosting companies will offer web design templates for their users, allowing the novice user to build an attractive site without too much difficulty. There are also many companies which will sell such templates, a simple Google search will show thousands of results with prices ranging from zero to $100. There is always the option of hiring a professional web design studio. This is probably the best choice if you are planning large complex web site. The price for this would depend on the size and complexity of the design needed. Even a simple site could be in the range of $1,000 to $2,000.

Elements of Successful Web Design

  1. Navigation. If you are designing a web site, the most important element for success is good site navigation. When a user arrives at your web site he will not want to spend time searching for ways to move around the site. Make sure that all of your links are laid out in a simple and easy to read form. Links should appear in the same place, and in the same order, on each page.
  2. Site Map. Include a full linked sitemap as a separate html file on your site. Your visitors' should be able to access every page on your site from the sitemap.
  3. Home Page Link. There should be a link back to your home page on every page of your website. Make your logo a linked graphic!
  4. Size Does Matter. Design for the average user. A screen resolution of 1024 x 768 is the current standard. Check your design using a smaller monitor to ensure that the appearance is right. Remember that not all visitors will be using a 26” wide-screen LCD monitor running at 1920 x 1200 like the one you may have.
  5. Consistency. Make sure that your links appear in the same place, and in the same order, on each page. Make sure that you always use the same fonts, colors or images for the links.
  6. Accuracy. Finally, always make sure that all of your links work as expected.

Choices in Site Construction

There are different ways to construct a site. Each has it's pluses and minuses. If you're goal is to rank well in organic search for the search engines like Google and Yahoo, an all Flash site is probably not your best choice.
