1. Register a Domain Name – The first thing to do is choose a domain name for your website. A domain name consists of two parts, the name itself, and then the Top Level Domain, or TLD. This is the part that follows the period, or dot. For example, mycompany.com or mycompany.net. GoDaddy or Dotster offer domain name registration. To see if a domain name is available, you can go to the webpage of any accredited registrar and type the name you want in the search box. You will immediately see if the domain name you want is available and other available domain name options.

2. Build Your Website – A web page is written in a language called HTML. In order to produce an HTML file, all that is really needed is a basic text editor. But most web pages are built using an HTML editor, such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage, that allow you to preview the web page visually while you are working on it, instead of typing in code and then having to load the page into a browser to see what it actually looks like.

A second choice is to use a webpage template where the design is ready-made, and you just add your own information. Many web hosting companies offer free web page templates for users. There are also companies, like Dream Templates, which sell templates for a reasonable price.

3. Find a Web Hosting Provider – For a web site to be made available on the Internet, it has to be hosted on a Web Server. This is where web hosting comes in. It's just like renting property. 4. Nameserver Address Changed – Your hosting provider will tell you what their nameservers are called. These are servers that hold the addresses of the websites hosted with your hosting provider. You will need to go back to the domain registrar with who you purchased your domain name, and change the nameserver information there to that of your new host so your visitors gets directed to your website.

5. Upload Your Files To Your Host Providers – In order for your website pages to be seen, they need to be loaded onto your Hosting provider's FTP server. An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) site is like a large filing cabinet. In order to upload files to an FTP site, you need to connect using FTP software. There are both free and for a fee FTP software programs. FTP software that is designed to be installed on your computer. It transfer files back-and-forth between your computer and the server via the Internet, usually just be dragging your files into the server once you are connected. 6. Set-up Your Email Accounts – When starting a new website, one task that needs to be accomplished is the set-up of any email accounts that will be needed. A typical web hosting plan will allow a user to set up a number of different email accounts, as well as setting options like email-forwarding or auto-responders using the Control Panel.
